Rethinking crystals and archangels
The theme of this blog, and some of the content, goes back awhile now, but it’s become relevant again so I thought it worth sharing with the community once more. It also demonstrates how experiences are reworked, recycled and carried forward. This is what I wrote awhile ago now. In the light of a dream......

Having been asked to create a resource guide of crystals to heal emotional and psychological trauma, especially PTSD, I turned first to the crystals I use every day to deal with minor and not so minor traumas. I’ve had more than a few challenges myself during my three score years and ten so I’ve had many opportunities to discover which tools work for me – and for the people who consult me. I’d like to share these old favourites with you. In addition, there are several remarkable new stones emerging to help us heal not only our own experiences but those of our ancestors and the planet.
Family and racial dramas have a powerful but largely, so far, unacknowledged effect on our personal health and well-being. As does our own soul journey. Making some of us more susceptible to the effects of trauma as we are pre-programmed, as it were, to react badly. But this can be changed!
The secret is to find new ways to respond, to break the vicious cycle of cause and effect. Then we can thrive rather than merely survive. Although surviving in itself is a huge achievement. I’m not knocking it. But transform into being a thriver and you’ve really cracked it. You can live life fully again.
Crystals understand trauma, most of them have been uprooted and pulled from their home. They’ve been battered and bashed, abused and misused throughout their long history. But they’ve also formed the basis of medicine for thousands of years and been venerated as gods. From being ground up into a medicine to being crushed to make paint for your wall might be seen as a step backwards, but crystals don’t think so. They can radiate good vibes anywhere. It gives them an innate empathy unsurpassed in the natural world. We can apply these wonderful tools to healing ourselves.
Healing does not mean ‘cure’. It is a support system that brings us back into balance on all levels.
From my Little Book of Crystals
I am never without a crystal somewhere on my person. I wear them, keep them in my handbag or pocket, use them as essences, have them around me in my home, and they are always there to support me and everyone who comes into contact with them.
The one that instantly appeals to your eye or sticks to your fingers in a crystal shop will be the stone for you. Or, you can finger dowse:
Stress: the fight or flight response
Stress is estimated to be the underlying cause of around 60% of illnesses and it is the core of PTSD of course. Physiological symptoms of stress include trembling, palpitations, and depression. The response is due to the body’s ‘fight or flight’ survival mechanism. When a threat is perceived the body gears up for violent muscular action. Adrenaline floods the system. Blood pressure rises, heart rate speeds up, and breathing accelerates. Pushing away or denying stress creates hyper-arousal. Stress becomes internalised, leading to pain, insomnia, anxiety, irregular heart beat, high blood pressure, exhaustion, muscle tension, heart attack and strokes, or to over-eating or malnutrition due to intestinal reactions. Sounds familiar?
Crystals for adrenal overload: Aventurine, Eye of the Storm, Gaspeite, Jade, Nunderite, Picrolite, Richterite Balancing: Fire Opal, Rose Quartz, Yellow Labradorite Calming: Cacoxenite, Eye of the Storm, Fire Opal, Green Calcite, Kyanite, Rose Quartz, Richterite, Yellow Labradorite
Chakra: base, dantien (just below the navel), solar plexus (just above the navel).

The answer is simply to allow stress to be. To acknowledge it. But not to focus on it. To stay in the moment, breathing mindfully and rhythmically. Gently tapping your crystal over the centre of your upper chest or gently stroking your chosen crystal. This quickly brings the body back into balance and reduces the adrenal overload. Eye of the Storm is perfect for overcoming stress. (Buy one here: http://www.exquisitecrystals.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=Judy%27s+Jasper).
Operating on automatic pilot
Our brains are rather like computers. They run on familiar programs and are subject to hitches and glitches and freezes. The brain has checks and balances that push us along well-defined pathways. It can process up to 40 billion bits of information per second, comparing, judging and measuring. So managing that process and shutting off unnecessary mind chatter is vital.
Thinking in the moment
You then enter ‘receptive mind’ space. This is paradoxically both still and dynamic. It contains no preconceptions, no internal agenda, no compulsions or predictions. In this space you meet each moment as it arises and respond accordingly. Auralite 23 placed on your forehead or under your pillow (https://store6106298.yolastore.com/#!/~/search/keywords=Auralite%2023&offset=0&sort=relevance) shuts off automatic pilot and mind chatter, as does Fluorite, Banded Agate, Blue Kyanite or Herkimer Diamond https://store6106298.yolastore.com/#!/~/search/inview=product44571929&keywords=Herkimer%20Diamond&offset=0&sort=relevance or http://www.exquisitecrystals.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=Herkimer+Diamond.
But, before doing anything, you first need to cleanse your crystal and ask it to work with you.
Cleanse your crystals
If your crystal is tumbled or is a solid piece:
Power up your crystal
Hold your crystal in your hands for a few moments and ask it to work with you for your highest good. Then hand over to the crystal, it knows what to do.

Largely unrecognised until recently, post traumatic stress disorder can arise from major trauma but also sustained minor traumas, especially physical, emotional or mental abuse.
However, once PTSD was recognised it was portrayed in a way that made people feel like helpless victims, which is why I find the Carl Jung quote so inspiring. We cannot transmute something over which we feel we have no control, and we should not (although I dislike that word ‘should’) be blamed or judged for our reaction to it. But we do have a choice about how we respond to our current situation. We can choose to input a new program.
Choose to heal. It’s not always easy, there’s no instant fix, but we can use the crystals to support us in making choices that are for our own highest good and which increase our well-being.
Here’s an excellent one to start with:
If something triggers a stress response, or you are being abused in any way whatsoever, pick up a piece of Red Jasper and walk away. This vibrant crystal will give you the courage you need to leave the situation. Immediately. At the very first prickle of unease, or as soon as you recognise a trigger is about to be cocked.
The indications of PTSD vary so widely that it’s impossible to create a definitive set. But the list below gives a good overview and beneath it I’ve suggested healing crystals for each one. Crystals deal with causes rather than symptoms. There’s a few to choose from as every body is different, but you’ll notice that certain crystals come up time and again as you match your symptoms or feelings to the appropriate crystals. You’ll probably find you only need one or two to make a huge difference.
The cumulative effect of stress almost always affects the immune system so let’s start with immune support stones that will stimulate or sedate it as appropriate.
Immune system support
Place immune system support stones in the middle of your chest, about halfway down your breastbone.
Suitable crystals: Bloodstone, Quantum Quattro, Fluorite, Green Aventurine.
I would add addictions, compulsions and obsessions to the list of PTSD symptoms. They are so often a response to feeling out of control and utterly overwhelmed by life. Amethyst is the stone with an incredibly long history of continuous use to counteract these.
It will make an enormous difference. It is great for counteracting anxiety and depression too.
Similarly, you can use Botswanna Agate also Chrysoprase to overcome addictions.
I’d also add soul loss to indications. A subtle and complex situation that is rarely recognised by conventional therapies. But it can be seen in a certain blankness in the eyes. A sense of no-one home. Parts of ourselves split off in moments of extreme trauma and may need retrieving – and healing before reintegration. An old shamanic remedy for this condition is Nuummite (buy one here: http://www.exquisitecrystals.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=Nuummite ) placed on the centre of the forehead at the hairline. As soul loss can leave you wide open to invasion by outside forces, accompany with Black Tourmaline over the mid-chest to energetically cleanse both the soul and the physical body and then protect you. A Flint or Hematite at the feet grounds the effect.

Eye of the Storm (Judy’s Jasper): The Safe Haven
Like a ship sailing out on a trip so rough and long
So far from the shore, so far from home.
I set out in search of a reason to go on
And I found it in the eye of the storm.
A stone of dynamic stillness, this stone helps you to separate the wood from the trees and ascertain the bigger picture. Grounded and pragmatic rather than spacy, it nevertheless takes you to a wider bird’s eye view beyond situations, emotion or ingrained patterns of reaction such as fear or panic. From there you can make choices and take action.
The name ‘Eye of the Storm’ was suggested because holding it is like being in the eye of a storm, everything is turbulent, swirling around you and yet you are in a calm, objective space beyond fear or panic. In this space solutions become apparent. You can be drawn up the funnel of the eye to take a higher, overall perspective but do not lose your connection with earth. Here issues are brought up for contemplation and action. It reminds you that the bigger picture is fluid and changing depending on actions taken and decisions made.
The Cradle of Humankind stone comes from Magaliesberg, South Africa. It is a product of the archaeological excavations taking place at a spot where the oldest human and protohuman fossils are being found. It’s not a particularly pretty stone, very basic looking grey, black or white with the occasional brown. But that’s exactly right given its purpose is to strip you back to basics and help you rebuild yourself.
The stone also has a profound and very deep link to Gaia and all that is stored in the DNA of Mother Earth. It helps you to be ‘at home’ on the planet no matter how much of an alienated outsider you may have previously felt. So it’s excellent for those who’ve been uprooted/displaced and need to find a new home within themselves. Keep one in your pocket to provide support and encouragement to ground yourself once more.

Lost love or abandonment by someone on whom you were dependent can cause extreme trauma, even when it was not a healthy relationship. Whether it’s:
Banded Agate offers you the answer.
Tapping it gently over your heart or your third eye (in the middle of your forehead) or stroking it in circular motions beneath your left armpit, Banded Agate cuts the ties that bind.
Words are singularly the most powerful force available to humanity. We can choose to use this force constructively with words of encouragement, or destructively using words of despair. Words have energy and power with the ability to help, to heal, to hinder, to hurt, to harm, to humiliate and to humble. Yehuda Berg
Using Blue Lace Agate to calm yourself: Place your Blue Lace Agate over your throat. As you slowly count to four, breathe in and be aware of how the breath moves past the Agate and down into your lungs as your belly expands. Hold your breath and count to five. Breathe out slowly and gently counting to six. Wait until you become aware of the need to breathe in again before repeating.

“You can recognize survivors by their creativity. In soulful, insightful, gentle, and nurturing creations, they often express the inner beauty they brought out of childhood storms.”
― Jeanne McElvaney, Childhood Abuse: Tips to Change Child Abuse Effects
This stone literally sinks down through the layers of the past to reach the core going right down to the racial and collective levels. It clears the ancestral line of trauma, dramas, ingrained emotions and imperatives that have passed down the family line for generations. At the same time it preserves the soul learning and spiritual insights so that it can be incorporated into present and future actions and literally en-lighten the present and the generations to come.
Ancestralite assists lineage breakers to cut the past, so that toxic karmas and attitudes do not carry forward into future generations. It says: ‘the buck stops here. It’s up to you so get on with it. Now!’
Cauterising the etheric body, clearing the imprint of that karma and its effect on the present life body, it is particularly useful when a parent needs to put down feeling overly responsible for a child who was ill or in any way disabled during childhood but who has now grown to adulthood. Equally it assists you to find independence if you were that child.
The stone assists in standing on your own two feet.
To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best day and night to make you everybody else, means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight, and never stop fighting. E.E. cummings
Freedom Stone comes from the Robben Island prison where Nelson Mandela was sent to break rocks while imprisoned for treason. Throughout his 27 year imprisonment he rejected at least three conditional offers of release. On 10 May 1994 he was inaugurated as South Africa’s first democratically elected President.
The Freedom Stone says:
Lose sight of yourself.
Undervalue yourself – or others.
Try to make anyone over, especially yourself
Be your authentic self.
Accept yourself for who you are.
Fearlessly stand up for yourself and what you believe in.
Be true to yourself.
Inner beauty shines out more with each passing year.
All the means of action – the shapeless masses – the materials – lie everywhere about us. What we need is the celestial fire to change the flint into the transparent crystal, bright and clear. That fire is genius.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
I love Flint. It’s a much overlooked stone, even though it’s beneath so many people’s feet. It’s the most wonderful stone for grounding and supporting you while in incarnation. It is powerfully protective, turning back ill-wishing.
This stone is ignored in the modern world but it was indispensible to our ancestors. Its sharp edge was much prized. Flint hones the soul, cutting away all that is outworn and outgrown. It slices through psychological blockages and ties that hold you fast. The stone disconnects the cords through which others draw on your energy. Healing the site, it strengthens your boundaries.
But Flint never cuts off unconditional love.
A stabiliser and cleanser, the stone cauterizes karmic wounds and draws off toxic residue. With its stabilising action, it brings structural integrity to the body and anchors your soul during shamanic journeys. Flint creates inner core solidity to ride out earth and other changes.
Flint frees you from the ties of the past. Regrets fall away. ‘Mistakes’ are recognised as learning experiences on the soul’s journey but not dwelt upon. The stone stabilises you and facilitates being fully present in each moment. Flint takes the most amazing polish, transforming an insignificant stone into a thing of beauty. The ultimate soul polisher, it is perfect for transition rites of passage between one phase of life and the next.
Using this crystal: Working slowly and methodically sweep the Flint around your body about a foot or so out. Pay particular attention to under your left armpit. As you do, say out loud: ‘I release all ties, vows, promises, expectations, karma and soul contracts that no longer serve. I give and receive forgiveness and unconditional love.’ Sweep around the body to heal and seal your aura.

And finally, the one crystal I wouldn’t be without:
Brandenberg carries the energy of Amethyst, Clear and Smoky Quartz in one versatile package that connects to your soul plan for the present life.
This powerful stone of spiritual alchemy and deep compassion connects you to the immensity of your spiritual self and to Source energy.
Using this crystal for repatterning: Gaze into a Brandenberg with half closed eyes. Feel the energy growing larger until it totally surrounds you. It strips away all your pre-conditioning and outgrown patterns, and takes you into a place of perfection. Be still. Feel the new pattern moving into the spaces between your cells and the layers of your aura. [Extracted from Crystal Mindfulness]
